The goal of your community recycling programs is to divert material from landfills, reduce your carbon footprint and conserve natural resources. While paper, cardboard, plastic, aluminum, steel etc are being recycled there are many materials that are tossed into a garbage can each day can be recycled or “upcycled” into something useful. While we have manufacturers that are taking your plastic bottles and turning them into carpeting and decking, people are still not taking advantage of these programs.
Today a number of communities have been forced to scale back recycling service or provide a single container program that does not meet all the recycling needs of the residents. No matter what type of service you have, you can reach a goal of zero waste with creative recycling.
First and foremost look at the packaging before you buy so you don’t bring excess materials into your home. Instead of small plastic water bottles, opt for gallon jugs or use a water filter and reusable container. Leave plastic clothing hangers at the store to be reused. Have a clothing swap party to eliminate the need to toss clothing.
Now take a good look at the item you are about to toss. Can it hold something, is it durable, can you use part of it? Here are some creative upcycling ideas.
We would love to see your creative ideas. Thanks for recycling.
